Our EMDR Approach

“Our past affects our present even without our being aware of it” - Francine Shapiro

EMDR acts like a soothing presence, guiding your awareness through the turbulence of past pain, toward peaceful harbours where those memories lose their power to overwhelm you

At Synchrony Therapy, we aim to help people truly heal with real results —and that's where EMDR comes in. Developed by Francine Shapiro, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an empathetic yet powerful process that helps you release yourself from past emotional pain. The creator of EMDR described healing as a process of helping the mind naturally work through experiences that have become emotionally stuck.

Many people find that EMDR does not feel like reliving a traumatic event. Instead, memories often become easier to observe, as though they are part of the past rather than something happening in the present. Clients frequently report feeling calmer, more grounded, and less emotionally overwhelmed as therapy progresses.

Rather than erasing difficult experiences, EMDR helps the brain process and integrate them more healthily. The memories remain, but the emotional distress attached to them often decreases, allowing people to respond to the present with greater freedom and confidence.

At its core, EMDR recognises that past experiences can continue to influence thoughts, emotions, and behaviours long after the events themselves have passed. By processing these experiences safely and systematically, many people find relief from distress and a renewed sense of well-being.

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy supported by extensive research. While it is grounded in science, many clients describe the experience as one of meaningful emotional healing and personal growth.
